Good News for Families Affected by Food Stamp Theft: Help is Extended Until December 20

In Oklahoma City, over 2,600 families have faced the upsetting experience of having their food stamps stolen this past year. Luckily, there's a silver lining. 

Thanks to federal funds, these families can now breathe a sigh of relief as they can get their stolen food stamps reimbursed. This support was supposed to end on September 30, but, thankfully, it’s been extended to December 20.

This extension comes from a recent decision made by government leaders who worked together to pass a law, ensuring that the support would keep flowing for a bit longer.

One of those affected is Hope Hansen, a 24-year-old who depends on $237 a month from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to her Williams Syndrome. For Hansen and many others, these funds are vital for buying necessities. 

She shared her distressing experience of going grocery shopping, only to find out at the checkout that her account was empty - a scammer had taken her funds. This incident left her feeling incredibly embarrassed and stressed.

Many locals have shared similar stories over the last two years, which raises the question: Why can't these out-of-state transactions be blocked to prevent theft? 

According to Oklahoma Human Services, the rules set on a federal level require that SNAP cards be usable across different states, making it hard to impose such restrictions.

To safeguard your benefits, Oklahoma Human Services offers these tips:
 
  • Create a PIN that's hard to guess.
  • Lock your card between purchases using the ConnectEBT app.
  • Never share your card info.
  • Ignore texts or calls asking for your SNAP card details.
  • Always check card readers for tampering before using them.

To make things even safer, Oklahoma is planning to introduce SNAP cards equipped with chips by the summer of 2025. This new feature will offer an added layer of protection against thieves.
